Discovering the Magic of Audiobooks – A Way to "Read" on the Go

As January rolled around, I made a promise to myself to read more books. However, as many of us know, life has a way of getting in the way. Between work, long commutes, and travel, finding time to sit down with a book seemed nearly impossible. That’s when a friend suggested something I had always dismissed: audiobooks.

I’ve always been a bit of a purist when it comes to reading. The feel of a book in my hands, the turning of the pages – these were things I couldn't imagine replacing with just listening. But, with little time to actually read and an ever-growing list of books I wanted to explore, I thought, “Why not give audiobooks a try?”

To my surprise, it has been a game changer.

Audiobooks – The Perfect Companion for Busy Days

One of the best places I’ve found to “read” is during my long drives. Whether I’m commuting to work, running errands, or traveling, I’ve discovered that audiobooks are the perfect way to immerse myself in a story while on the go. I can now enjoy books I’ve been wanting to read but never seem to have time for.

My Audiobook Picks in January

In January, I borrowed a few audiobooks from my local library downloads in Bucks County PA to kick things off, and here’s a quick rundown of what I’ve listened to:

1. Surrender by Bono – An interesting memoir from the U2 frontman himself. Bono’s storytelling, paired with his signature voice, brings his journey to life in a way only he could. It’s a mix of personal history, music, and reflections on global issues, all with his unique perspective and down to earth attitude.

2. Being Henry by Henry Winkler – If you’re looking for something lighter, this one’s a great pick. Known for his role as "The Fonz" in Happy Days, Winkler’s audiobook is filled with humor, charm, determination, insecurity, mistakes, success, lows and reinvention while staying true to himself with the love and support of his amazing wife. His stories and experiences shine through, making for an engaging and inspiring listen.

3. The Tattooist of Auschwitz: A Novel by Heather Morris – A powerful and moving story based on the true experiences of a man who falls in love during one of the most harrowing periods of history. Morris does an exceptional job of telling a deeply emotional story that has stayed with me long after I finished it. Books like this are so important not only from an accurate historic perspective but from a human perspective which can be both abhorrent and beautiful.

Why I’ll Keep Listening to Audiobooks

I never expected audiobooks to be so captivating. They allow me to read while doing other things, which makes it easier to find time for books in my schedule. Whether it’s while driving, walking, or even doing chores, I can now enjoy my favorite books in a completely different way.

Plus, listening to books narrated by the authors themselves, like Bono or Henry Winkler, gives the experience a personal touch that traditional reading can’t quite match. Their voices, emotions, and inflections make the stories feel that much more intimate.

What About You?

Do you listen to audiobooks? If so, what have you been listening to lately? I’d love to hear your recommendations and discover new audiobooks to add to my growing list. Maybe it’ll be the perfect way to read more this year, no matter how busy life gets.

See you next month…
